Federal Constitutional Court publishes annual report for the first time

Press Release No. 19/2021 of 03 March 2021

Today the Federal Constitutional Court published its first ever annual report, both as a print and a digital version.

With this new format, the Court aims to reach out to the public and to domestic and foreign institutions in particular, seeking to provide information about the Court’s role and its work, its structure and the different types of proceedings. Going beyond the publication of mere statistical data, the Court has created the annual report to make it easier to access and comprehend the information provided and to put it in context. The report presents not only the Court’s Justices, but also the work of its more than 270 staff members. Moreover, it explains the Federal Constitutional Court’s role in the international legal order and highlights meetings with other institutions held to exchange views as well as other events that took place last year. The report incorporates selected statistics on proceedings. Besides providing this general information and other insights into the Court’s daily work, the annual report also looks at several important cases decided last year: it contains an overview of decisions concerning measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and summarises several other decisions rendered by the Senates and the Chambers in 2020. The report concludes with an outlook on cases expected to be decided in 2021.

The 2020 annual report is available on the Federal Constitutional Court’s website in German and English.
